Direct2Drive question

If I purchase something on Direct2Drive, do I get unlimited downoads, a la Steam? Because I change hardware so often and reinstall windows as often, I don't like keeping track of discs, so Steam has been perfect for me because I can reinstall, download and then play.

But, I remember reading about a particular download service that offered unlimited downloading for a limited amount of time (I think it was EA). If I can back up the material to CD, I think I'd be ok with that, I'd just want to know ahead of time.

Thanks

yes and no. they have install limits (or used to) but you an email them or i assume call also and get additional activations. you can download the game any time.

EA has the download expiration which is a bunch of BS.

Install limits? Does that mean I can only install it, say 3 times or whatever, and then I have to contact D2D to install it more?

I wish they're support site had critical information like this (I did just email they're support).

Thanks

i think pontifex is somewhat correct about D2Drive but I'm not sure if the install limit applies to all games or only certain ones. I have bought a few games and whenever i need to i just log on, download them and install without having an install limit.

it may be certain games. i don't know for sure though. i've had a few that needed reactivated so i assumed they were all like that.

And it simply sucks having to wait for a reply to be able to install again.
When i PAID for the game i expect to be able to install any time i want and
Not have to ask for permission and wait until someone feels like replying before i can install again. (which for me was always next day or more)

IMO, i HATED Direct2Drive last time i used it and wont ever use it again.

I can confirm this when I upgraded my pc once. NWN 2 stopped working and I had email customer support. Apparently NWN2 and a few other games are linked to your hardware so they may not work if you change your hardware around. Took a few days to get it all sorted out but frankly I like Steam better.

That's exactly the game I was looking at. Mybe I'll just buy the physical discs. I wish it were on steam...

No.

I bought UT3 through them. I downloaded the torrent instead of downloading the exe through their server. Virtually mounted the ISO and installed with the CDkey provided. No problems.
edit: it may depend on the game.

You get unlimited downloads, but the registration code can only be used for several installations (usually 5).

However, I recently had to reinstall SupCommander a 6th time and had to e-mail them to unlock the code. They responded within 10 minutes and unlocked it no problem.
