Direct X 9 on Vista?

Is it possible to remove DX10 from Vista and install DX9? I tried to install the Company of Heroes demo but it won't install due to a DX9 file that's missing. I had one other program give me the same error. It won't load to the point I could try XP compatibility mode.

Regards
Bill

No you can't remove DX10. You can try installing DX9 (I did this during one of the post Beta 2 builds).

You can set compatibility modes on executables that reside on CDs, you don't need to have had installed the application.

I've installed DirectX 9 on Vista beta 2 and RC1 before without problems (Oblivion and FEAR required some file called something like "dxd3d9_27.dll"). I installed the version from the Oblivoin DVD.

I tried installing DX9 from my Silent Hunter III disk. It said installed after I ran the installer but it only took a second and dxdiag reveals DX10 still installed.

Ya, for some reason Vista doesn't ship with the D3DX libraries. Run the latest DirectX9 installer, it's smart enough to only install what you're missing.

Vista has it's DirectX 9/8/7/etc base and DirectX 10 base, you can have both at the same time, they don't interfere with one another, software will use one or the other.

Keep up to date with the latest DirectX 9 updates from Microsoft, and you won't need to update DirectX through game CDs. Microsoft usually releases a Redistributable package every couple months, for example, this is the latest. Run this when extracted, and you will be up to date.

Check here for the latest redistributables. This is the same thing you'll get with game CDs, except you'll know you're completely up to date with this.
