THE GREAT SATIN of software has found some mercy in its heart and will finally end the agonising wait for DirectX 9 and is likely to release it tomorrow.

With three betas and two release candidates version we saw slowly and surely that DirectX 9 is about to become a fully fledged bird that will help some companies live happier and release DirectX 9 drivers.

The only currently shipping card(s) that support it are Radeon 9700 and 9500 Pros and Amateur, which many will find glistening under the Christmas tree.

Nvidia did present its DirectX 9 supporter, Geforce FX but this card will be available no sooner than February in quantity.

ATI will be the first to benefit from this, since they have been shipping DirectX 9 hardware from September and now they will offer their customers free drivers with full support for DirectX 9 final as soon as it's officially released.

ATI is already offering an RC0 version of DirectX 9, its fancy demos and drivers for 9700 and 9500 generations but in about one day it will have the final one ready for its rocking role.

Developers will finally have a real API that they can play with. µ

Anand, we know you got a GeForceFX reference board in your lab! How long until we see some real benches?

You're going to install a MicroSlop Beta? Why not just randomly press your reset button while you use your system? (Same effect :p )

Putting "shutdown -s -f -t 1 -m \\computername" in the last line of the logon script works wonders. :) I've installed the DX9 RC to play with the ATi DX9 demos and didn't have any serious problems. Of course the 3DMark Zealots will scream bloody murder when their precious program is broken, but this is the PC industry and that's life. Go out and buy Symantec Ghost and you can get your sleep back at night! :)

Cheers!

I'm currently using the RC0 of Dx9 and everything has been perfectly stable ever since day 2 (took a while to get it after Microsoft stopped distributing the RC0 version:p), that and along with ATI dx9 beta drivers

what exactly do they mean by amateur?

They mean the non Pro versions which are slightly slower. Such as the Radeon 9700 as opposed to the 9700 Pro.

So what's the proposed date when DX9 will be available and will it still support win98?

What's the pro's/con's of it?

Will the performance of non DX9 card (ti4200) increase, decrease or remain the same with directx 9? Will we even be able to install it?
