Direct X 9 compliant card...?

One of Need for Speed Underground's requirements is a DX9 compliant card. I have a Radeon 9100 that's a DX 8.1 card, and it runs fine on 2x AA and 2x AF at 1024x768. It does slow down when I get sparks or other effects though.
My bro's running it on a cheapo MX400 (DX7 card), and it runs really ugly and slow.

What's DX9 compliant mean? Does it mean it's time for me to get a 9600 Pro?
 
It means that you will see better graphical effects over dx8.1. If you want to play the game the way the developer intended it, then you need a dx9 card.
 
Get a 9600 Pro for ~$150 to see the game the way the developers meant it to be seen. Better yet, get a 9700 Pro for $200. Avoid any Lite or SE versions of the cards, even though they are cheap.

dx9 compliant means the card must be able to function with dx9 installed. as for getting a 9600pro, it wouldn't hurt.
 
Hehe, in the case that as long as the card functions with DX9 installed, I guess I'm set 🙂 Smooth graphics at 2xAA and 2xAF is ok for me 🙂

I think I read something about how there's different words for "working" with a certain DX version (compliant probably) and "fully supporting" on a hardware level a certain DX version.

Somehow I doubt that. Even my ancient ATi Rage 128 functions with DX9.1 installed, the particle affects look completely different on my Asus Radeon 9800XT. I get the feeling that either the drivers, the card, or DX disables features automatically that your caard cannot support.

 
You can have DX9 installed and have an old card, it will work. It depends on the game. If the game works around dx9 and your card doesn't support it, it will either block the dx9 effects to the dx your card supports, or you wont be able to play the game. Right now there are 2 things I know of where the game says it cant run: If your card doesn't support Hard T&L and if your card doesn't support cubic maps.

Compliant means the GPU supports the minimum necessary functions at the hardware level, as dictated by the DirectX specification. For DirectX 9 that basically means PS 2.0/VS 2.0 and floating point precision.
