Is it possible somone will crack it or somthing to make it so DX10 can run on XP? Or is direct X tied into the OS in some crazy way like internet explorer and getting it to run on anything else would be a PITA.

DX9 shouldn't have been compatible with POS Windows 98/ME. DX10 should be made for Windows XP because Windows XP is still a good OS and based on NT like Vista will be.

I hope DX 10 will be hacked to work on XP. On the other hand, DX9 should have been for Windows 2000/XP/2003 and above only and not supported POS Windows 98/ME.

Who knows what MS will do. I have heard rumors of SP3 for XP after Vista is out. If that happens I wouldn't be surprised to see DX10 lumped in with it.

MS isn't going to do/say anything right now that would make someone think it's a better idea to stick with XP - obviously they want people to feel a need to upgrade.

I thought Microsoft had already made a firm commitment to SP3 for XP? Anyway, as stash has pointed out (in this and many threads) DX10 is tied to the new driver model for Vista so I don't see it being made available for XP at all.

It's on their "road map" but no time on when we will have it. The rumor was the time we get it.

It'll take a while for DX10 titles to really take off, so XP will be good for at least another year of DX 9 gaming.
Though I hope MS aren't giving us BS about not be able to port DX10 to XP just to improve Vista sales. That would really suck.
TBH, I'm really underwhelmed by the whole Vista 'thing' and will only get it if I get a free copy through work.

My understanding was that SP3 would mostly be a roll-up of the patches since SP2.

DirectX 10 will not work with Windows XP, and a service pack will not change that.

Yes, I think SP3 will mostly be a patch rollup - i'm pretty sure there is a Microsoft statement to this effect somewhere

Microsoft says that DX10 is dependent on the newer driver model, but is it really true, or just a clever way to froce people to upgrade.

Windows XP has been around for almost 5 years. Why does it get only one new version of DirectX, while POS Windows 98/ME recieved multiple updates of DX. :( :( :( With Windows XP, it started with DX 8.1 and was updated to DX9. It has been DX9 with no updates ever since. Windows XP is a good OS and should receive more than just one new version of DirectX.

Everybody will probably just buy Vista when it comes out. It'll run DX9 apps faster too so you don't have to upgrade your hardware if you don't want to.

If you want DX10 then buy Vista. Simple as that. I don't see why people would want it with XP. It probably wouldn't even be that good.
My keyboard battery is dying so have to stop typing.

People should have been forced to buy at least Windows 2000 if they wanted DX9 because Windows 98/ME were POS operating systems. The performance with DX9 has probabaly suffered because it was made compatible with POS Windows 98/ME.
