Hey i am about to get a whole new system but i was plannign t get a 7800GT but i have been looking into direct x 10 and what MS is doin with that and everything and it seems like what might happen is that i might have this high end card for a yr then direct x 10 cards might come out then it would basically be obsolete and i am wanting this new system to last me a while.

so would it be beter to get something cheaper like a 6800GS or a 6600GT and have that hold me over untill DX10 comes out and i can get a real high end card then with a new monitor that can support high resolutions (my monitor at the moment can only suport upto 1280x960)

or just get te 7800GT now?

I think with your monitor, 6800GS should be fine as long as you dont crank up AA/AF all the way, especially in new games.

But then again, vista might get delayed, when are we going to see DX10 card in stores? When are games going to take advantage of DX10? (Usually it takes 1-2 generations after spec to really take advantage since by the time DX10 is prevalent, 1st generation DX10 card is too slow for it).

Even though Vista is supposed to be out late 2006 it doesn't mean that games make a shift for DX10 so fast,

I think there is a lot to be said for holding on for a while. DX10 could be a big deal, DX versions have been taking much longer to come out but have been more major upgrades every time. Aside from that speculation I think it's probably a good idea to target a platform that will be slightly faster than the gpus in ps3 and xbox 360 as more and more games become cross platform. Getting something of the generation after g70/r520 may last a very long time because it may become prohibitively expensive to make games that cannot be ported to consoles. Waiting for something faster than what is in the consoles is necessary because of the overhead of the pc platform.
