direct tv vs digital cable

This is the perfect thread since I was just debating between getting cable tv or directv. Maybe someone could help me out.

I have an hdtv with a built in receiver, but the reception at my house is horrendous. My local cable provider does not provide an hdtv signal, and the directv representative over the phone didn't seem to know squat. Dish network is going to charge me $600 bux to get an hdtv satellite/receiver for hdtv channles.

I'm especially interested in Amused's setup. Do you just have one satellite/receiver that receives all your programming for under $100 bux? How much was the receiver and how much do you pay a month?

Or perhaps any idea as to how I can improve my reception? I've seen people with huge satellite dishes in their backyards. What's that all about?

i had time warner digital cable in austin. it was great. i couldn't really opt for a dish though, because i live in an apartment complex on the bottom floor and would have to put my dish on my porch facing the wrong direction.

time warner quality was great. very easy set up, use, etc. ordering pay per views was simple, and Video On Demand is a great new feature.

for $50/month i got 200 channels (with the 50 music) plus 16 channels of HBO and Cinemax.

i recently had to get rid of it because i'm a poor bastard and i didn't watch enough cable to care.

No, no, no. I have a dish that's under $100 and a STB that receives DirecTV, OTA and cable signals (both HD and analoge) that's just under $600.

Tuners on TVs are obsolete. I have no idea why they sell them, or people by them. I haven't used a TV's tuner since the late eighties.
