direct tv vs digital cable

Im totally confuse why people chose to get direct tv or some other type of dish tv instead of getting digital cable from their provider

So lets take direct tv for example. You have to buy a dish for one tv is 150 for 2 its 200. U also have to sign 1 year contract. If if u want to be able to get hdtv channels u also have to pay additional 100 for the receiver. Now let look at the my local digital cable provider. Its times warner. No contract is required, no equipment to buy. Hdtv receiver comes free and as with direct tv u can only watch 2 tv without getting additional box. Now as for the montly price and channel availability it seem to be its the same. Here is the channel that i get with my provider With direct tv u get this,(can't even open their webpage to link it here 🙁 ) Well pretty much u can get what u get my provider but its cost 45 instead of 39.95 as with my provider. So im i missing some reason why its better go with some dish tv company instead of going with digital cable company

They will be installing this comming friday so i have sometime to cancel if i chose not to get it.Any advice.

sorry for any spelling errors

Because digital cable in my area was significantly more expensive than Dish network. And did not offer the channels I wanted.

For one, if you get $200 or even $150 for a 1 year contract you are getting screwed. Haven't you seen the ads that give you everything free with a 1 year suscription?

In my cable area, you have to pay a installation BS fee of $35 bucks or something, if you want your cable hooked up.

ALso, many digital cable systems only encode the higher level channels as digital, make the regular network channels(nbc, abc, fox..) come in as regular cable which is NON-digital.

Also, you CAN split cable to other rooms in your house, but you will only get the premium channels on a TV with the digital converter box, depending on how your cable is installed. If you want to broadcast directv to different rooms of your house, you can get a splitter to do that(there are other ways also).

I have digital TimeWarner. It is a great service. The contract and equipment to buy from Digital Satellite really kill the deal for me. I am going to stick with digital cable... at least for now.

ye i seen it but don't remmber the # but still as far as i can tell the deal from my digital cable company is better then direct tv plus i don't speend $100 for hdtv box and contract so can cancel anytime i want.

Ditto. Plus, I was able to get an integrated DirecTV/UltimateTV receiver for very cheap.

Just to reiterate my stance.

Dish Network cost me $150 up front for installation and hardware. The hardware included the sat dish, receiver and PVR unit upgrade. I play $55 a month for 150 channels plus locals.
The digital cable would have cost me at least $80 if not $90 per month. I don't remember if there was an installation fee or not. It definitely did not come with a PVR unit, but had some sort of weird PVR-like functionality. The main reason it cost so much was that the channel I wanted (well my British roommate anyway) was Fox Sports World.

Would have gone with DirecTV but they were more expensive than Dish to get that channel.

So maybe your area is cheaper. I have Cablevision not Time Warner for my provider.

Most of the time directTV is cheaper
Most of the time directTV looks much better
NFL sunday ticket? - directTV
High Defintion? - Most of the time not on cable

direcTV is still way better than cable...forget those stupid cable ads on how they're better than satellite.....u get far more channels (and they update frequently)....payperview movies are MUCH MORE easy to order..(just order w/ the remote w/ the reciever's GUI), payperview quality and sound it unparalleled....

as long as u have a nonobstructed signal path to the satellite...u can't go wrong w/ direcTV...my parents had direcTV..it was kick@ss!...now they moved, and they couldn't get a clear path to the satellite, now we have stupid adelphia cable which is pretty much gay.....no cartoon network wtf?! and payperview quality sucks!...

YUP

and I had digital cable from comcast, then i went to Dish TV. Dish had MUCH clearer reception and was more consistent. comcast digital tended to go out on my more often. also, the comcast package cost more even after the $5.00 / month Discount they gave me on the internet access.

The only advantage for me to having comcast was I get BOTH Philly and NY local stations. Also i get YES network.

hmm interesting,so guess my area is much different then most areas. Not sure if i should be fealing lucky or not

DirecTV only has a couple HD channels...SHO, HBO, and 2 or 3 more...and it requires the bigger dish, which aren't as comman to find for a bargain.

oh btw, with comcast digital to get the dishtv equivalent of top 100 and 1 premium it's about $80 / month. dish was cheaper for me.

The "digital" cable in my area was an overly compressed joke. The analoge channels (channels below 100) looked better. Also, no dolby digital was available here.

In the end, barring the upfront costs, DirecTV was also cheaper per channel than my local cable.

Finally, my local cable is not offering HDTV.

DirecTV offers HDPPV on 198, HDNet on 199, HBOHD on 509 and ShowHD on 543.

Soon to come are ESPNHD and DiscoveryHD.

The DirecTV dish required to get HDTV is a 24" oval with triple LNBs. It can be had for under $100 if you look. It can be had cheaper if you're a new subscriber.

Amused,

Knew I'd find you in this one.

Notice how I said "mostly" in my comments. Because for me my cable service looks superior to directTV.

My cable service also offers HD and 5.1 sound. HBO and other premium channels look and sound very close to DVD. But I think I'm the exception. I had the cable company out numerous time tweaking my receive level and what not.

Hey, that's cool. You're lucky. I'm not. 😛

BTW, no non-HD channels looks anything close to DVD quality on my TVs, but that's another story 🙂

watched "shrek" on showtime HD the other day.

Simply mind-blowing, and I'm getting it on cable for 2 bucks a month more.😀

Hmmm...because Cable TV of any kind isnt in my area since I live out in the middle of Farm land central so DirectTV it is.

I don't pay anything extra monthly for HD on DirecTV.

so did you have to buy that STB?

I didn't.

:tongue out:

My STB also decodes OTA analoge and DTV broadcasts AND cable analoge and DTV as well, and combines them all with DirecTV content into one easy program guide. 😛

so in another word im just lucky

Just FYI, Time Warner Digital Cable is probably the best service there is out there - they don't charge much for an HDTV STB, and they have excellent service. Road Runner is the same too - fastest up/down speeds I've experienced with broadband around Orange County, and rarely ever connection interrupts.
