This one caught me by surprise. I didn't even know that these guys would stoop so low.

I see this clean cut man in a cheap suite walking towards me while I'm mowing the lawn. I tried to avoid him, but it was too late. He says he's from Direct Energy and then says that Duke Energy (my service provider) made a mistake on my bill. He wanted to see my last billing statement so that he could make corrections to it. I ask him point blank if he was trying to sell me something. He promptly responds with a no. I tell him that my wife does the bills online and we don't really need the paper statements. He keeps urging me to go inside and look for one. At this point I get annoyed and tell him I do not want whatever he's pushing and walk away.

I mean really, do people fall for this?

You are supposed to pull out your gun and tell him to get off your lawn.

A stranger wants to enter your home. You should be able to get him in your dungeon with little to no physical effort.

I would have told him that since Duke Energy said there was a problem with my bill he should already have a copy , that is if he is working for them, otherwise I am going inside to call Duke Energy and could I get your name ?

If I have time I always like to fuck with these people by asking them all kinds of questions that they simply cannot answer and will leave them questioning what they are doing.

I was going to post the same thread yesterday (or the day before, can't remember cuz i've been home sick).

2 sleazy cheap suit used car dealer types in their mid-late 20's come to my door, one yapping on his phone and the other tells me he's from Con Ed and wants to see my bill to make sure i'm not paying too much. Sounded like BS right away so I grilled the weasel and he had nothing. Ended up chasing them out of my building.

Low life ESCO salesman. They have a law in NY which states these scum must to provide ID and state which company they are from. Doesn't stop them from continuing to lie as the odds of anyone recording them is next to none, so they continue to get away with it.

I'm going to keep a bat near my door for the next crew that comes by asking to see my utility bills.

Here are some youtube videos people made of these scamming thieves

He said that he was working with Duke Energy, but also said that he was with Direct Energy. Direct Energy is a competitor to Duke Energy. I'm not sure if what the guy was telling me was even legal to say.

Was it some kind of energy saving device he was peddling?

What does ESCO salesman refer to? Is this an illegal scam, ie identity theives, or a pitch for something?

If you don't want to deal with them, just give them a polite "no thank you" and ignore them. It's the only way to deal with people like them.

What does the quality of his hotel room have to do with whether he's a scammer or not? Besides, if he was in his cheap suite walking toward you...what were you doing in his room? :whiste:

ESCOs are suppliers of energy in NY. We can buy our energy from the utility or one of the ESCOs. We have to deal with these companies all the time because the elderly always fall for it and then they call us all confused.

ESCO stands for Energy Service Company. Basically they're a virtual utility provider (similar to how Virgin Mobile and such piggyback on other cell phone networks). They try to talk you into signing a multi-year contract to buy energy from them, which is anything but a deal.
