direct connect gigabit

I'm testing my extra LAN cables by directly connecting my macbook pro and imac (no router/hub involved)

if I'm getting this screenshot ("automatically" + "1000baseT"), is it enough to assume that the cable can handle gigabit speeds? Two of the cables say CAT5e.

Cat6 has more stringent standards for noise and crosstalk than Cat5e; while a Cat5e may negotiate a 1000BaseT connection, it might not work so well at actually transferring data, particularly over longer distances.

Use the network utility in /Applications/Utilities to check the link speed. It will give you the definitive link speed and then some.

Thanks guys, will try network util...

Reason I'm asking: I had a short ethernet cable embedded under the floors during my recent renovation, but it was (I feel) shoddily put in so I'm a bit worried it won't take gigabit speeds when I make the move to a gigabit router. Even if the cable passes the test, the wall jacks that I plug into seems to be a bit suspect :colbert:

(It does work at the moment just fine, on 100mbps.)
