Hi

I'm trying to figure out how to get these two computers to communicate with each other.

I have them connected by their NIC cards using ethernet cable, and i've given them both unique ip addresses. I also put them both in the same workgroup and they have unique names.

What I don't understand is how to make them able to share files or do remote administration.

Is there anyone who understands how to do this?

Are you using a crossover ethernet cable? A straight through ethernet cable won't work directly between two pcs.

General network cabling rule of thumb: Like devices use crossover cables (PC to PC), unlike devices use straight through cables (PC to switch).

Exception: Any device with an Auto MDI/MDI-X capability can use either cable type.

Hope this helps!

Welcome to AT Network Forum.

Once th two are actually Networked you r can use Remote Desktop (to a WinXP Pro computer.

Or this, http://www.ezlan.net/vnc.html

As for Sharing (File transfer).

Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings,http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is allowed to be shared.

Ok, I have my computers hooked up w/ a cross-over cable--now what?

My old computer is Y2K.
  • I have gone through the "Network Identification Wizard", ie., Control Panel/System/Network Identification/Network Id.. Under "Network and Dial-up Connections" there is a "Make new Connections" wizzard which gives me an option to connect w/ a direct cable; however, it requires a LPT1 or a COM1 port which I do not have on my new system.
    I have shared my folders
I have disabled my virus protection.
My new computer is Vista
  • The equivalent "Make new Connections" does not have an option to connect w/ a direct cable.
    I have shared my folders
I have disabled the Vista firewall and I have no virus protection installed.
Windows explorer, on both computers, under "Network Places" shows nothing; ie no other folders.

Cable Crunch, sorry about poaching on your post. What two systems are you connecting?

Jack, thanks for all the info. Your link to Y2K info seems to be redirected to a general site in which could not find any "how to" info.

I have a 98 system that I need to do next. Hopefully, I can get it to work.

Thanks,

Mark
