Direct attached storage devices

I stumbled across the Thecus N2050UD at Newegg. It's a 2x3.5"SATA enclosure w/ USB2.0 and eSATA connectivity. The chipset supports RAID 0 and 1. All for $150.

It seems that a box like this gives home users an affordable and scalable means for mass storage. Are there other devices/appliances that perform similar functions? I'm about to pull the trigger for one of these and a couple of high capacity drives...

I wanted a NAS-device at first, but I can't find one for less than $500. At that price point, I could probably build a low-grade server and find some *nix package that would do the same thing and more. (This of course assumes that I know *nix, which is not true.) Are there any NAS-devices with entry level pricing? $150 for this DAS seems a bit steep, but it's far less expensive than anything I've seen.
