Dinner or Supper...which term do you use?

Dinner sounds very classy and formal. Supper sounds common and poor. You never hear anyone say they're going to a "supper party"; it's "dinner party"....and depending on which part of the world you come from, dinner can mean lunch.

Which term do you use; where do you come from; why do you use it; do you interchange the words?
