Dining out handouts

So lately I've been noticing two oddities as I've been out eating...

1) At sit down restaurants I've noticed that the servers will round your total so that they eat the difference... for example, on a bill for $22.64, I'll get $7.50 back when I pay with $30.

2) Lately when I've ordered at fast food joints, I'll order a medium and they'll just give me a large. This has been happening quite a bit lately and at many different places.

Now, I'm certainly not complaining about the freebies... but I'm curious if anyone else has any experience with this.

I did that for years at the pizza shop I worked at. If an order came to $10.05, there was no way in hell I was going to count out $9.95 in change. It's a nice good will gesture that customers notice, and helps build repeat customers.

Look at it from an extreme example: Suppose something came to $100.01, and all you had were two 100 dollar bills. If someone didn't round it down to $100, avoiding having you break the other $100, you'd probably be thinking "you petty little bastard." Even if you wanted smaller bills for the $100, most people don't want to walk around with 99 cents in their pocket.

Someplace between rounding off on that extreme example, and always charging the exact amount, lies a nice happy medium. Heck, at the pizza restaurant, all the prices were configured so that pennies never entered the mix. Everything always worked out to multiples of 5 cents. Pennies are meaningless.

At Taco Bell when the small cups ran out anyone who ordered a small drink got a medium cup. Same if the medium cups were out.

If it was a cute girl I'd tell her I was upgrading her drink because of how pretty she looks.
