DIMMs, Registered vs Unbuffered?

How much of an issue is there in putting the "wrong" type of DIMM in a system. For example, a system will work fine with unbuffered RAM, but you use registered DIMMs, should that be ok? Or on the flip side, you stick unbuffered DIMMs in a system that wants registered modules... Thanks.

Registered DIMMs can only be used on motherboards that require and use Registered ECC DIMMs exclusively.

You can't use unbuffered DIMMs in a system that requires Registered DIMMs.
