DIMM 3 doesn't work, am I screwed?

After installing a new HSF on my nforce2, DIMM3 doesn't work. I already replaced the northbridge HSF, so I can't RMA. DIMM3 is the dual channel DIMM, so I don't have dual channel available anymore. I am using the same memory as before, 2X256, and they work just fine in channel one and two. If I put anything in channel 3, I get one long beep at post. Is there anything I can do to get it to work, or am I screwed? Also, if I cannot get it to work, does Dual channel do anything?

Well, since dual channel only increases performance by like 1 to 5%, it's a small deal. I'd say next time, don't get into modding till you make sure everything on the board works 😉

BTW what kind of ram? It's not very likely, but certain types of ram don't do dual channel. I also assume both sticks are the same brand/type?

everything DID work. Crucial PC2700, ran in dual channel for months just fine. I replaced the CPU HSF, and now DIMM3 doesn't work. I can use DIMM 1 and 2 just fine, so the only thing I lose is dual channel.
