So technically, we can make copies of everything we own, as long as we can do it without breaking copy protection

Exactly, so all the MPAA would have to do is release their own backup tool to be compliant.

The media companies will eventually change when they realize they'll make more money using a carrot then they will using a stick.

And you think they'll ever realize that?

well i havent heard of them even talking about releasing a backup tool. So until they do its too bad for them that people keep cracking their craptacular copy protection. Besides which, even if they made a backup tool. i doubt they could really make one that would prevent you from making more just a backup copy, which is what they are worried about.

Instead of worrying about illegal copies and downloads, they should just make it nice and easy to copy and download, and charge a reasonable fee for doing that. I would be very willing to pay a reasonable fee for this as opposed to having to look on torrents and such. I buy all my MP3's from allofmp3.com. I havent downloaded any music from any torrents or any napster replacements in years. If the RIAA would get some brains, they could easily shut down allofmp3.com by competing with them on the market, rather then trying to sue everyone into oblivion.

And as for if they will ever realize this, vcr's are legal and so is blockbuster...so one way or another they will catch up i think. eventually someone will realize they could be making more money by playing nice.

And they won't, why should they when hundreds of people have already written the tools for them? But with HDDVD and Blu-Ray things are different, so far the only backup tool requires you feed it some magical key that no one but the author really knows where he got his.

VCRs have been legal for how many decades now and they still haven't caught on? Unless something major happens it will take a very long time for them to come around.

his experience with Vista does not sound like an upgrade.

You don?t know anything as you have not done a actual install or upgrade? you are parroting what you think other people know? I like to actually find things out for myself and I have found Vista solid, easy to install and stable.

i thought we came to websites like Anandtech to get information about new operating systems, among other things.

if we were to apply your reasoning to cars, you would have to buy a Corvair and get burned in a crash, instead of relying on Nader's book about GM.

i agree, learn by doing is a great way to learn. it can also be very time consuming.
