Hi,

I have a client who has a virus ridden dell dimension 2400. Nice case and power supply and dvd cd rw already in..... needs a cheap office server and something to run a brother 8xxxx series scanner and wants to scan a lot of old paper files.

I was wondering if a newer atx or micro ATX board could be fitted into the case and power supply..... then just get some cheap combo and hd ...

Possible??? Win7 license with hardware would be too expensive vs new cheap comp with it????

that system has got to be 7 or 8 years old at least. the power supply is probably near the end of its life.

is the scanner USB?

I have one myself. The DVD drive is most likely with the IDE interface, so you either should get some AM3+ motherboard or legacy Intel motherboard(i.e LGA 775 board) with a PATA connector or try your hand with some PCI-e card adapter. I also know that the cooler assembly is not quite your typical HSF.

Power supply is standard ATX.

Given the age of the Dell, and the customer's needs, I would check the Dell outlet for a new/refurb computer... Going with the new CPU/mobo option, IMHO, you would be dumping way too much money in a very old computer... even just replacing the old HDD might be too much money.

Not sure, but I had an old Dell server in the past.. tried to replace motherboard, but the headers weren't standard, so I couldn't mount the new motherboard to the case and get the backplate to line up properly. You can always drill it out, but at that point, why not just spend 60 bucks on a new case/ps combo. A new dvd writer is like 20 bucks as well.
