DIM8400 PS2 mouse & keyboard failure

The PS2 mouse and keyboard started acting flaky in my sister's Dell DIM8400. When she tried to reboot the BIOS reported "keyboard failure" and now they're not responding at all. She tried switching the mouse & keyboard from another computer but that made no difference. Anyone have a clue what the problem could be? She doesn't have a USB keyboard or mouse to try and the PC is out of warranty.
 
Boot the PC and press F8 before XP starts to load. Select "Last known good".

Thanks for the link PegLeg. It solved her problem. I didn't think it would because her keyboard appeared to be dead - no lights or any other response - but she tried it and it worked anyway.
