Dim HP DV6000 Laptop Screen

I am working on a friends laptop. It is an HP DV6000 and the screen has become almost unreadable. The brightness function appears to be somewhat functional but the screen is dark and seems almost to have lost one of the primary colors as many of the icons still visible seem inverted and on the window borders things like the expand/shrink/close icons are basically invisible. I verified that the video output is good by connecting it to an external LCD and that appears to function normally. I am going to try and repair it but would like some expert opinion on what to do first. Does this sound like the inverter or the backlight or the screen itself. Should I start with the easiest part being the inverter and hope that is the problem. Any information is greatly appreciated.
