Dim CRT... About to die?

Hey, I bought a used CRT from a local dude. It?s a Hitachi C811 Plus. It?s a 20inch viewable with a res of 1600x1024 at 75hz. (.24 dot pitch.) I was fiddling around with the adjustments and noticed that I have to crank the brightness and contrast to get my whites to look white. My dad has the same monitor and he doesn?t nearly have to crank it up as high. My last monitor I had, got dimmer and dimmer until one day it died. I was wondering how long of a life this monitor has yet? I know it?s sort of impossible to guess that kind of thing. Also, WHY does it get dimmer? Is there some kind of replacement part I can install into the monitor to revive it?

Some monitors are just not as bright as others, even when brand new. It varies between different brands/models. I had a Samsumg that I always kept at 100%. Then I replaced it with a MAG and to achieve the same brightness level, I only needed to keep it at 75%.

Also check the color temperature setting as that can make a difference in the brightness as well.

I am comparing it between the SAME monitors. I swapped monitors between computers and it was dim on the other PC also.

For 60 bucks it was a deal. If i wanted a new one, id have to pay 300-700 bucks. And I already stated as CRTs get older, they get dimmer. Thanks for you useless reply.

He never made a complaint. Had you read his post you'd know that he simply said, "I bought a used monitor and it seems to be dimming, my old monitor did the same and died shortly thereafter. How long will this one last? How do I repair it?"

I have the reverse problem with my old CRT, I can't get it to give me proper blacks anymore even with the brightness cranked way down, its not bad but I really noticed it when I set a 15" lcd next to it and it had better blacks than the CRT

hrm. Dont know. Have you checked the settings on the color correction of the graphics card? Try a different cable.
