Alright, so about 2 weeks ago my computer of ~ 4 years crapped out on me, probable motherboard problem. So I had been eying to upgrade, and instead bought BB's Compaq SR1750NX.

Now, this computer boasts, amongst other things, a sweeeeeet ATi Radeon Xpress 200 Graphics chipset. My old 9800 is an AGP :( This only has PCI-e.

To add insult to injury, my 3dmark05 score was a whopping 503. Gag.

So here's my dilemma. I got KOTOR 1 for x-mas, and I'd like to play it. My Xpress 200 won't work well with it, as you can probably tell by the 503 score. So eventually I'd like to upgrade to something like say...a 6800GS or an X800 of some sort.

BUT should I wait and in the meantime buy something that will just be good enough? I can probably swing getting a vid card for my birthday in May if need be, and with all the new cards coming out, they'd probably drop in price by then?

Oy, computer deals nowadays...

Cliffs:
got KOTOR for xmas
want to play
have only Xpress 200 onboard new comp
upgrade to 6800GX/X800 or to something just to get me through til May-ish?

Congrats on your new machine. I picked up the same box for $125AR as well. You could also get a new motherboard (socket 939, dual pcie/agp, like the asrock) and put it into your old rig, using the new cpu & cpu cooler + old 9800 pro. That's my plan.

The compaq has a 250 watt delta PS. Not only will you have to get a new graphics card, but also a new power supply if you want to use that box as is. It could also use a few more case fans.

Yeah, 503 is a pretty asstacular 3dmark score. I presume you've de-castrated your machine by removing all the crapware and changing power settings from 'Energy Star' to 'Desktop?'

It's a hp. The 250w ps is actualyl pretty high quality. I ahd a 240w hp psu. I ran amd64, 2 sticks ram, 9800pro, 1optical, 1 hard drive on my hp for a while before upgrading the pus to a better one. It fits standard ATX psus.
