You buy someone a gift for over the expected price range because there is a rebate involved. A nice fat $50 rebate. The gift is encosed in those evil evil  secure plastic molding you find on most electronics.

Do you laugh ridicule in the the face & take your exacto to the plastic, or do you swallow your scrooge & give the gift? Do you give the gift & mention the rebate(for him), or do you mention the rebate so you can claim it?

It is nearly impossible to split the shell cleanly in two, & then cut out the upc without much notice. There are very good odds he will make a remark in jest regarding the missing bar code. We will laugh & I will feel like an ass.

Please vote, as I need the confidence to steady my hand. :)

Cash it. If he appreciates the gift and your friendship, then he won't care. If he doesn't, then find a new friend.

Tell him straight up. "I didn't want to spend this much but I was able to find something perfect for you with a rebate so I had to cut the UPC off. I hope you like it because now I can't return it."

If you give the gift and the rebate, you'll have to provide the receipt and THAT is tacky.

Cut it out, shrinkwrap it, and then put it in a cardboard box. When he asks, say its OEM.

Not much you can do. If you don't, you'll have to give them the reciept...

I like this idea. He's not some office secret santa that I want to make an impression on. He's a close relative.

If I bought my brother something, I'd totally use the rebate. I actually ended up doing that last year. He went to my parents' house for winter break last year and I dropped him off at the airport. He complained about needing more hard drive space. He left me his computer and I bought him a hard drive and installed it for him. The hard drive was one of those big sales and so I used the rebate to get it cheaper and decided to just pay for the rest as his gift. He was happy about the gift and didn't care about the rebate.

TACKY. Just give him the gift and forget about the rebate. You are missing this option in the poll BTW.

Staples Easy Rebate FTW!

On topic, I wouldn't cut open the package, return it and get something else or accept the total cost.

get a cheapo whicker basket, or nice gift bag/tissue paper....unwrap the package and arrange in gift bag or basket... make it look like it was done to make the gift look more attractive, not to glom the UPC code.

:)

Yeah, this really isn't all that unusual. It's the gift that matters, only the biggest snots would even think twice about you cashing in a rebate to get them an awesome gift.

Or make up something like, "This is where the price was. Now you see why I had to kill you, err, I mean cut it out."

don't give anything that requires a rebate. because they might not like it, have one already, it doesn't fit, or whatever.
