Dilema: Keep fixed PS3 Phat, upgrade HDD to 300+Gb or Keep PS3 Slim?

What to do with my PS3 fleet?

  • Keep the Phatty and upgrade HDD, sell Slim

  • Keep the slim, sell the phatty as is

  • Upgrade the phatty and keep both/Donate to one of my brothers in law.

  • Keep both as they are - Explain in post

My Phatty failed with a laser issue, so I bought a new laser cradle and repaired it. In the mean time I had bought a Slim to keep me playing and had originally though of selling the Phatty on eBay as faulty.

My main issue with the Slim is it is NOISY as f. The Phatty is super quiet. Another £40 will upgrade my phatty to 320Gb over the Slim's 120gb and I'm sure the Slim will sell well on eBay, especially as I got it for £199 in a special deal and should be able to get that again for it used(new price is £240-250 for 120Gb S).

Help!

Wow... tough choice. Noise vs Potentially more failure prone hardware. The Slims I've seen were as quiet or quieter than their older siblings, but if your Slim is noisy then I'd be tempted to keep the older system despite the hardware failure. I haven't voted yet because I can't decide what I'd do.

Which PS3 fat is it? If it's a 60 GB or an 80 GB with PS2 BC, I'd say definitely keep it. Otherwise, keep the slim.

I had both and chose to get rid of my phat one and keep the slim. I don't think the noise is that much of a problem (but we have a somewhat loud apartment with HEPA filters, etc).

the slim just seems better imho.. like the buttons better also

sounds like your slim is jacked up cus my ps3 slim is super quiet.

Yeah, it does seem so. If I'm playing MW2 for a few hours it'll go mental and make a noise like a cooking laptop trying to cool itself down. It's not good at all. Should I call Sony and get it fixed? Is this a common issue with the Slim?

It's just the plastic moving after cooling down from heating up. It won't hurt anything at all. Every Slim I've heard has been quiet as hell. I have an 80GB and it's quiet (compared to my launch 360) but loud compared to the Slim.

No, no, it sounds like a vacuum cleaner.
