AMD's Kaveri-based APUs are unlikely to show up in the market until February 2014 as mass production will not be ready until the end of 2013, according to sources from PC players.
AMD originally expected to start supplying its Heterogeneous System Architecture (HAS) Kaveri APUs in the second half of 2013, but according to the company's latest plans, the CPU maker will only provide two A10 and one A8 APU pilot production samples to its clients in December 2013, indicating that Kaveri APU-based PC products may have difficulties showing up in the retail channel before April 2014, the sources said.

hardly definitive, but not surprising.

Look at AMDs track record in 2012. AMD said Richland was shipping in January, but we didn't see it for months later. If AMD says kaveri is shipping in December we will see it 3-4 months later.

Damn this is bad. Broadwell-U/Y are placed within H1/2014 in Intel's roadmaps and the rest of the mobile Broadwell line up is probably coming early H2/2014. Seems like 28nm Kaveri will spend most of its life competing with 14nm Broadwell and its improved CPU performance/greatly improved GPU performance (vs Haswell).

Life in the high end is tough, isn't it?

AMD needs to kill its big cores now.
 
This is disappointing. I really want to see what HSA can bring to the table before I purchase parts for my desktop.

They'll need a big because AMD can't rely on Intel to supply them with uni-processor Xeons for their Seamicro systems, especially if it continues to intrude on the traditional 2p and blade server markets. What I suspect is that AMD will leave the dual and multi processor market for good.

either way, the point is this doesn't really bring anything new to the table. Or at least it shouldn't. Despite the lack of confirmation by AMD, the evidence pointing to no kaveri in 2013 has only been getting stronger since it was first rumored.

yet people were seriously suggesting Richland was going to be on the market for less than 5 months before being replaced by Kaveri.
 
AMD must surely be worried about the incredible advances coming from Intel over the next year. How will they cope against the might of "Haswell refresh" and much higher priced Broadwell mobile chips? Surely doomed this time!

Back in reality, it's probably been delayed because they have been inundated with console orders. The reality of the market is desktop CPU's are bottom rung in terms of importance for both Intel and AMD, and Jaguar is the only chip that matters to the latter.

this is assuming kaveri and console apus are using the same fab, is it tsmc or glofo?
 
We don't know yet.

It doesn't have to be fab or capacity related though, simply just prioritising and staggered releases is more than enough reason. AMD has a lot of different tech coming up on 28nm so the dying desktop market and big core mobile chips are surely first on the delay list. Just gotta accept that this kind of CPU is no longer important to AMD's future plans.

I don't know, but logic would tell me Kaveri = GF, consoles = TSMC


anyway, this is bad news.. soon (1 or 2 months) the market will be flooded by cheap i3/i5 dual cores with HD 4600, and Richland might not look very attractive...
 
That really sucks. I was looking forward to seeing what Kaveri would bring, hoping that I can dump my desktop and opt to go with a small mATX w/o discrete GPU for 1080p gaming. More importantly, Kaveri looks really interesting. Now that time frame is looking like mid 2014 for desktop chips? That's a full year from now and I don't think I'm going to wait

You don't...get it...do you? AMD's stuff is cheaper precisely because it fails to keep up in terms of performance per watt, and a two node process disadvantage is certainly a contributor to this lag. Broadwell will command a premium precisely because it will be a better performer per watt.

Actually, as far as process goes, this doesn't make a difference. What AMD had was a small opportunity to inch closer, but now that's being pushed back by several months. 2014 won't see a 14nm Broadwell but rather a 22nm Haswell refresh, which likely means small bump in clock speed.

AMD isn't being screwed on the process side by Intel, but ARM.

On desktop we get a 22nm Haswell refresh, but in notebooks - where all of the sales are - AMD will be fighting with a 28nm Kaveri against a 14nm Broadwell.

we all know amd isnt chosen in many products on their technical merit, many oems will offer intel+low end discrete v. and amd trinity/richland part. whether it be 22nm haswell or 14nm broadwell, this probably wont change.

One can wait for confirmation, but I think it was pretty logical to assume Kaveri would not be seen until 2014 even without this announcement. It is already mid July, and we havent even seen any leaks, so to me it was highly doubtful it would be seen in 2014, especially since we are just beginning to see real availability of Richland.

We saw working silicon at Computex 6 weeks ago. What is a concern is that we've seen nothing at all from Intel on 14nm. For as long as I can remember they have been showcasing their node advances as soon as there has been silicon to show, but so far they haven't shown anything on 14nm. I'll be surprised if Broadwell doesn't slip into H2 2014 as Intel puts everything behind Atom.

If AMD is a couple of months late with Kaveri, Intel can afford to be a couple of months late with Broadwell. Nothing changes except those of us who used to look forward to new big-core releases have to wait longer for minuscule performance gains. Atom/Jaguar is where it's at.
