No, they are just offering a premium service with three levels now. They explicitly stated before the premium service started that they would not be making any changes to the free streams. This new service is just for those that want extended features like higher bit rate streams and dedicated servers with less breaks and buffering.

Once I pay off a few bills this month, I will likely sign up for the platnium level plan as I listen to DI almost everyday, and often record their live DJ sets, so I don't mind paying for better service and to help out a great site..

:)

Edit:

The three levels are explained here.

I listen to DI.fm, have been for over 5 years. Suxs to see that a pay service is up.

$11.95 for "platinum" is quite a lot for internet radio, I think that satelite radio is about the same price. Maybe not the same quality that internet radio could be (because of different encoding schemes), but, satelite has many more "channels" than DI could ever get without some very extensive licensing work, which would make it even more than $11.95/mo.

This will be interesting to see how it all turns out, not only for DI, but for all internet radio stations, as well as pay-per mp3 sites.

Why does it suck? They are leaving the free streams, and trying to generate some revenue for the site. They are offering more for the people that are willing to pay. I personally don't see why that "sucks" when they are leaving the free streams. I have often wanted to donate ot their site in the past, but I didn't want to use Paypal, so this is a win win situtation for me. I can give some dough to help out a great site and service, and get better quality and servers in return...sounds fair to me.

This is similar to what AT has done with the subscriber service...

bah. $12.00 for 160k? that sucks. A bit higher quality and I'd be willing to part with maybe 7.00/month.

Few free channels having issues this morning

Just a heads up, some free channels are skipping. Until then remember the Premium service is skip-free.

It's happening already... what did I tell you?

I would consider it if it were 192kbps but since it's not I'll stick with the free streams.

They just announced that they're pulling the 128k free streams. So much for their promise not to.

Ive listened since di started, and through DI have become business partners with DJ Lithium who people who have listened to di will probably of heard of.

I can tell you now, DI will not remain free in the future, I cannot give you a timespan but there was talk of introducing such a service and phasing out the free service well over 18 months ago.

The people behind the scenes at di have no idea what they are doing, they are not intelligent, and they do not listen to what people say.

I have spoken with Ari on many occaisions trying to get him to do certain things, the same reply leads to the same result > nothing.

DI used to be ok, a while ago, now i rarely listen to it, which is a shame because provided the right people were there with the right ideas, di could be massive by now, instead I can see di slowly progressing on a down hill slope to the point where they will have no listeners.

I could write an essay on what happens behind the scenes, what has happened, stuff involving law suits etc and many other problems invoking what types of music people want (Didnt get) it could go on and on and on, so ill stop here and just say its a shame.

Edit: Oh in answer to what you said in simple terms, yes the free streams will either go, or be reduced to something pathetic like 56k

I was about to post this. The 96k stream is probably going to sound pretty bad so I think I'll just move on when that time comes.

I've just found out about the site and wonder how I ever survived without it. As for the new subscriber feature I would'nt worry too much, yes you will eventually have to start paying, but not for a long while, if they made eceryone pay straight away the site would lose A LOT of listeners. But bloody hell I LOVE that site. And personally, I would subscribe if I had to, there's nothing else comes close. :D:beer:

Exactly. To some of us, it's worth it. I'm amazed they have been able to have so many streams for so long without anything but private donations. Why does everyone expect everything to be free all the time?

Well I guess that idea's out the window, it's 96Kbps now. That is the first of probably many more changes to be made in the future until the free stream is non-existent or 24Kbps only. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted...

Yes, it's inevitable, and nothing is free, but it's still sad to see it happen.

You're right, I was just going by what they said at the runup to the premium service. I prefer the 64K WIndow Media stream most of the time anyway, it seems to be of equal or better quality as the 128K MP3 stream. Either way, they are still keeping the free streams up...so far.
