digital vs. analog monitor

I am thinking about purchasing a new LCD (19") for a new system that I am going to build.

Is there any real world benefit to a digital capable display vs. an analog input ?

I don't do gaming but yet I want a good crisp clear display that will not damage my eyes (any further than they already are).

What brands would you recommend ? And which brands should I avoid ?
