Once again we cater to the procrastinators of society. The weak, the slow, the incompetent people have won.

I honestly cannot for the life of me understand how someone has not yet purchased, made a plan to purchase, gotten the coupon to purchase (if they really needed it) one of these digital converter boxes.

Snip from: CNN.COM
"The Commerce Department ran out of money last month for its program to help people pay for converter boxes needed to make older TVs receive the new digital signals. There are 3.7 million homes on the waiting list for the $40 coupons, said Rep. Rick Boucher, a Virginia"

I understand that not everyone lives in a populated area and they do not have the availability of cable. Possibly someone does not have enough money to pay a monthly bill for a satellite system. Some may not want the line run to their house because of suspicion that they would have to put another layer on their tin foil hats to prevent their mind from being read by evil corporations and government.

However, for the government money that was spent to give people coupons to buy these digital converter boxes we could have run cable lines to everyone in the US that did not yet have them and probably talk the cable companies to transmit ABC,NBC, and CBS over those lines without encryption so that everyone could watch them.

I fully admit that I do not know how everything works in the transmission process. I just think we are spending way too much money to convert old technology instead of putting new technology to use. I also think that it's rediculous that we give people 6 months (or more) to prepare for something very simple and then have to delay it.

If you were unable to do this small task for any reason other than you flat out could not afford it then you should be punished by only being able to get your news via local radio stations until you buy the box yourself.

does this even matter to anyone except for those waiting for the digital box?

Oh and Bullshit on this fantasy ^

I still wonder what's gonna happen to the old folks in my area that rely on OTA transmission, but still don't have any idea what a digital converter box is, nor why they need one.

Didn't someone post that a certain percentage of people believe you are going to need a flat screen TV to receive the signal?

What did Carlin say? Figure out how stupid you think the average guy is and then think that half the population is stupider than that guy.

Tell them that probably ~10% of that static they're watching is residual radiation from the Big Bang. That shit blows them old farts away when they hear it
