Digital SLR Question

ok i just have a simple question for you all. I am planning on getting a Digital SLR in the not so distant future 2-4 months from now.

I really like the Cannon 10D because its sweet as hell. The Nikon D100 is nice also.

I also already have a Nikon N80 film SLR and a few lenses and if i got the canon i would need new lenses. from what i have read the canon is better then the D100 but is it enough better to warrant me getting new lenses for it instead of getting a Nikon and using my existing lenses?

and i am wondering is Nikon is planning to release a successor of the D100 anytime soon? I ask because it would be sweet and it would drive the price of the D100 down a lil.

I can't substantiate this in any way, but my guess would be that Nikon will come out with a D100 update sometime in the next 6 months. They have recently put out an update for the D1 and the Coolpix 5000. The only ones that aren't updated are the D100 and the Coolpix 5700. Keep checking dpreview, they will know as soon as a new camera is announced.

While on the topic of DSLRs, what are peoples' opinion of the Olympus E-1 and the "4/3" system that they developed with Kodak? Is this something that will catch on in the SLR market? It looks like a nice camera, but I wonder if people are willing to invest in an entirely new lense set for a new camera. I thought it was interesting to look at because I have no equipment already and it would be a cool toy to play with. 🙂

Edit: spelling.

Yes, Canon and Nikon lenses are definitely not compatible. My cousin has a 10D and the pictures are awesome. If I could afford it I would get a digital rebel without thinking twice. Now, I should add that we both already have lots of 35mm Canon equipment so going to a Canon DSLR makes the most sense. I don't think you'll be unhappy if you go with a Nikon DSLR vs. a Canon. Course, I also don't know how much you already have invested in Nikon equipment.

I can tell you for a fact since I've used both product lines extensively, that if you don't have a lot of money to invest in a camera, Nikon isn't the way to go. I think they take superior shots, as do their film SLR's over Canon, but unless you can drop a wad of cash on it, the Canon will give you more bang for your buck.

Edit: I also have owned two of the same N80 camera you speak about and it rules 😎

ill have that wad to drop regardless of which one. im looking to spend 2K on whatever.

i do that have 2 Nikon Nikor lenses and am looking to get a thrid one. (marco) for it. stupid lenses cost to much. thats why im leaning twards teh Nikon. and hopeing the will put something new out soon

and yes the N80 is sweet. i like it more then the F6006 iused to use

Not to hijack, but has anyone any experience with the new(ish) *ist-D from Pentax? I'm excited at the prospect of being able to keep using all my K-mount gear.

I am wanting the pentax too, It really needs to brought to a more reasonable price for its feature set though. From what i mave seen its closer to the D-rebal then anything. I thought Pentax was going to release a digital based on the MZ-S. The *ist looks bacily like the ZX series (I have the ZX-l).

As far as the original post goes I would stick with nikon, esp if the lenses you have are good lenses. That would leave you with the N80 as a back-up to the digital. I really don't think you will see much of a differance between the two systems to warrent dumping your Nikon stuff. Just my 2 cents

you could always sell/trade the nikon lenses and go canon. but probably not worth the hassle.

i personally would lean towards the canon, just from experience. but both cameras are very nice. get a d100 and use your current lens set. either way you go, you'll find shortcomings wishing you had the other, so go w/ what's simple 🙂

What are the actual lenses do you have just out of curiosity?

I'm still leaning towards the Sigma SD-9. that Foveon chip, while having fewer MPs, puts out a really sweet image.

My father bought that camera a couple of months ago and I must agree. It sure does put out some awesome pictures. The selection of lenses is not the best but he does not seem to mind and I was impressed with it when I took it on a trip to San Fransisco. I might have some pics up in a couple of days.

Just read some reviews of the Pentax *ist (who ever thought of that should be smacked) and it seems that the body is upgraded from their regular camera line and by all appearanes it take pretty good photos. Off to the Pentax store (I wish).
