I know this is a pretty broad field/subject. I am a junior EE major and would like to know if any of you have experience in these areas. What does the job market look like and what kind of stuff do you mainly do in your job: chip design, coding?

Yeah, learn VHDL or Verilog.

I DID h/w design with DSPs and developed Verilog and VHDL logic for Gate Arrays in the same designs. One of the systems was a Satellite modem. The other was for a company that manufactures finger print image capture systems for identification and storage... Identix TP2000
