In general, I prefer cameras built by camera makers. All things being equal, I would go for the Minolta because the lens is probably better. Further - Sony uses their own proprietary memory stick - Minolta uses the tried and true, and somewhat standard, Compact Flash for storage.

I've used the 707 and it takes great pics. It has a great Carl Wiess or is it Viess Lens? I forget. I have not played with the Minolta but here it is good as well... Remember if you are novice to digital pics the sony will be far less confusing as the Minolta has alot of features/settings that are for the prosumer users only. which ever you can get cheaper I'd go that route.

EXman is right - the Dimage 7 is classed as a "prosumer" camera. That means your personal KB has to be pretty good. The Sony is probably easier to use. I put myself in the "prosumer" category - am on the "waiting list" for a Canon D60 body.

I own the Minolta, and have used the Sony.

Totally agree with the other gentleman on the ease of use. If you want a camera that will be easy to use out of the box, get the Sony. If you want more options to "play" with, opt then for the Minolta.

The Minolta can be difficult to operate correctly especially if you are new to cameras in general, but if you know about fstops and such, you will find the Minolta a much more enjoyable camera.

In either case, they both take great pictures!

Good luck on your purchase

Does anybody know if I can change another (tele)lens on it? Or put one on top of the lens?
