Digital phone service?

This was odd....a guy came in to CC today, and told me he needed to run his phone line to both his computer and his phone. I took him over to the splitters. He said no no, I need a router...he showed me his manual...apparently he just got some all digital phone service? 😕 You plug the phone into this ATA adapter(no idea what that stands for), and then that plugs into your DSL modem through ethernet? 😕 😕 Weirdest...phone setup...ever!
