update WASHINGTON--The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on Thursday in an attempt to overturn key portions of a controversial 1998 copyright law.

The suit asks a federal judge to rule that the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is so sweeping that it unconstitutionally interferes with researchers' ability to evaluate the effectiveness of Internet filtering software.

By suing on behalf of a 22-year-old programmer who's researching the oft-buggy products, the civil liberties group hopes to prompt the first ruling that would curtail the DMCA's wide reach.

How about this LInky?

This just pisses me off when politicians think they can get away with this. Since I don't have any of the "things" their looking for and they attempt to hack my PC, their going to be in more trouble then they can even dream about.

It doesn't really matter though because once they or if they find a way to "hack" (I don't even think they even know what their talking about) someone will just find away to encyrpt the transmissions anyway.

So how does this play with the House passing the bill for a possible penalty of death for hacking if the government is alread on the way to allowing Hollywood to hack into your personal box? Which is it going to be?

Sounds like the old saying, " Don't do what I do, just do as I say." - Uncle Sam

Why don't they practice what you preach!! :|:|:|

It's always sad when citizens are forced to sue to repair the damage done by our elected officials when the later makes bad laws.

This is necessary as the DCMA went way too far in some spots. I hope it succeeds.
