Is the EXIF data the only traceable data on each file?

Note to self: Wipe EXIF metadata or save in a different format...lol.

its amazing they can do that kinda stuff...im sure they will treat it like theft, but do you think they would even bother with this if it was one of the harry potter books?

and they couldn't change this exif data to read differently? I thought it was editable. If so then all the owner would have to say is it could have been anyone.

well, I don't care as much about harry potter, but imagine catching baddies with this...think about all the stalkers, upskirt shooters, and pedophiles online...etc. this could help "clean" the world a bit...

Except it's not hard to wipe exif data.

hahaha good luck with that one. If they trace it back to the owner, they still will not get anywhere.

"Oh that Canon 350, I sold that 2 years ago at a flea market"

The idiots are wasting their time.

Doesn't much matter in this case, as some people were receiving legitimate book orders as early as 4 days before the scheduled sale date.

but don't tell cobra, he still thinks all the spoilers were fake :D

true, but it still helps....what percentage of the baddies out there know how to change exif data? If this helps to catch just one of the bad guys, it's enough.

anybody who would go through the absurd act of reading each scan is prolly the hardest of the hardcore who will buy the book anyway or just extremely cheap people who would not have bought the book either way.

Yes, this Harry Potter/Transformer crap is getting old. Lets have a meaningful discussion on '1984' or something.

Read the article. They're hoping that the guy had the camera serviced at some point. Wishful thinking, I think.

...and now the guy is probably selling/destroying the camera as we speak...

No doubt. But if they determine who owned the camera, they could conceivably find other evidence against him more easily. If he wasn't smart enough to wipe the EXIF data, maybe he wasn't smart enough to distribute the pictures without leaving a trail? Or maybe they'll impound his computer and find other recent photos on it with the camera's serial number in the EXIF data.
