For basic photography, not really. But I suggest you go to best buy and other stores and check out these cameras and see their optical zoom capabilities.
You'll need either a tripod or image stabilization feature to use high x optical zoom. (Or rock steady hands)
High optical zoom shouldn't be a major criterion for normal users, i m o.

I don`t have that problem, just use a fast shutter speed in "shutter priority mode" and you`ll find using 10x zoom is no problem unless the light is low,I like to take all sorts of photographs and find the 10x zoom very handy, however in lykaon78`s case I think a 3x or 4x zoom will be adequate for his photography needs.
I have an older point n shoot 3.1 MP Kodak that has 2X Optical Zoom and decided to get the Canon PowerShot S1 IS with 10X Optical 3.1MP Camera for the extra Zoom...well I still use the Kodak more esp. Family and friends Pics/Shots because I do not need the extra Zoom and it fits in my Pocket. I'm thinking of selling the Canon in favor of an SLR because I do not use it that much...only on far away distant shoots
