I am looking for an entry level digital camera under $300. What major features should I look for in the camera? The camera will mostly be used for non professional activities, such taking pictures of family and of architecture.

OP, once you get a decent camera you'll eventually get the urge to buy a D-SLR... might as well start looking at the entry-level D-SLRs like Pentax K110D/K100D, Nikon 40D, etc. (Pentax can sometimes be found for ~$400 w/kit lens)

The major difference is that instead of having a 1/2.5" sensor you have one with many times the surface area. This results in MUCH better pictures, especially in low-light situations.

For me, it's... Optical zoom, image stabilization and correct color reproduction.
