Digital Camera Suggestions

I want to purchase a digital camera, but do not feel like paying a fortune. I understand that ccd size is more relevant than the megapizel etc, not that I am sure it comes in to play in this scenario. Anyway what would you guys suggest in the price range I mentioned as the best consumer point and shoot digital.

Thanks for the response, im not really sure. Size is irrelevant to me, if that helps optical zoon would be nice as would IS (is IS available under 250$?)
