Digital camera suggestions?

Just got rid of my old sony 4.1mp camera and looking for a replacement.
I am really wide open about what I want and would like plenty of suggestions and sample pics.

[*] I am not opposed to getting anohter sony but, to be honest, I have used several canons over the last few years and like them.

[*] I want something that shoots great pics out of the box with a good auto mode but also has various manual settings.

[*] I'd like to keep the price ~500 but could go up a bit if necessary.

[*] Not my biggest priority but I would like something that would do good night time/low light pics.

[*] Not sure if I'm ready for a dslr. If so I wouldn't be able to put much money into alot of lenses for a long time after the initial purchase.

[*] Since my last camera was 4.1mp I would like at least 5mp's or more.

I may be leaving out some stuff but I will update the thread if something comes to mind.

Again, please make suggestions and I would love to see high res samples you took that are not all photoshopped up. BTW not looking for pictures off of dpreview.com, I want pics taken by members here.
Thanks

Whatever you get, look for these things:

Remote flash capability (With adapters for standard PC socket flashes)
Add-on filters that use standard sizes
Remote shutter (wireless is best)

You'll find cameras with those features are sooo much more flexible.

You mentioned liking Canon, so try one of the new SD-series cameras if you need something compact, or the S3IS if you need a big zoom.

Tops in low-light shooting still goes to Fuji's F10/F11 camera; it also offers excellent photo quality. Zoom is a typical 3x and the size is neither big nor small.

If you're looking for all those features, might as well get a entry-level DSLR.

I like the Fuji cameras. The E550 is very nice, as is the F10. The F10 even boasts a 2.5 inch LCD window and can emulate film speed up to ISO 1600. I think they're both 6-ish MP and are in the 250-300 range. the F10 is usually more than the E550.

Edit: If you want lots of manual features, then the E550 may be better because the F10 doesn't have too much manual. Fuji has also come out with many similar cameras since these two, that I am not yet familiar with. But I know the brand and am very loyal because their cameras have always come through for me.

I really liked my canon when i had it. (i had the A95, which i bought after playing with my mum's A75) Canon just released a few new cameras, including an awesome elph. I'd check it out.

My Olympus has all that and only cost me $165. 😛

Thanks for all the help so far everyone. I'm still struggling with what I want to do. But isnce I sold my sony I just miss the abiltiy to take a wuick shot of something.
Dslr's seem good but there's no movie mode. It's not the most important thing but I do admit it came in handy a time or two.

Not trying to sound like a broken record but if anyone has any pictures they took I would like to see them along wiht what camera they were with. Reply here or pm please.

thanks again and keep the suggestions coming.

1DsMII 😛

My vote is to stay away from 8mp cameras. Image is noisey due to so many pixels in a small area. The 5MP cameras were sweet.

Even the EOS 30D or does that statement only apply to the P&S 8mp cameras?

Exactly.

It took me a long time to finally leave my Kodak 2.1mp camera behind and pick up this Olympus 4mp camera. And unless I can afford a DSLR, I'm in no hurry to put this one down either.

My old 2.1mp Canon PowerShot S110 still takes better pictures than my dad's Kodak 4mp and my grandparent's Kodak 5mp camera. In fact, my grandparents let someone borrow their camera for a summer trip and I lent them my little Canon when they decided to go do some camping. They loved the pictures they got off of my camera and went out and replaced theirs with a Canon SD500 shortly after that.

It's not all about the mp rating, that's for sure.

The statement is only for small sensor sizes so that would include mostly all P&S ones. The R1 has an APS-C sized sensor and it is good compared to P&S but not nearly enough compared to low DSLR (relatively).

EOS 30D is not out yet also. EOS 20D is the current one until the 30D comes out.

Mr N8 - Thanks for the link. I've been busy the last few days but still trying to decide.
This may be too broad of a question but what is the best camera next to dslr's? IOW which one rivals the quality, etc. of the D50, D70, Rebel XT?

There's a really hot deal on the Pentax *ist DL w/ kit lens for $479.

If you want low light, you can get a used 50mm F/1.4 from ebay for $50. The quality of that lens will destroy anything ever made.
*ist DL is loaded with automatic program modes.
Here are two shots with the *ist DS and the 50/1.4
portaiture
beetle supermacro, I used some $20 extension tubes to get this close
cat pic taken with my new 16mm fisheye lens I got for $105 new on ebay, this one is a bit photoshopped
another pic with the fisheye without ps
if you want telephoto, I got a 300mm F/4 lens off of ebay for $100, these usually go for $800 new!
taken with the kit lens

Yeah I do have quite a bit of lens. But they are a dime a dozen for really high quality primes(no zoom) on ebay, as Pentax can use any lens they ever made, including many Zeiss M42 lens.
If you just want something easy and versatile, you can always get a 28-200mm superzoom for about $150. The kit lens can be sold for $100 on ebay, so the total setup with the superzoom shouldn't cost you much more than $500, and you can basically use the camera as a really high quality P&S.
