Hi all,

I see prices of digital cameras even in the 2 megapixel range fall to the 299+ range. Is there any reason its getting cheaper other than the fact that newer models are coming out with better features.

Just a thought.

Bit like computers I spose. One of the only commodities where the product gets better and the prices get cheaper.

BTW, my dad just got himself a Sony DSC-S75. The best digicam I've ever laid eyes on.

The mainstream thing is right, but it's mainly due to competition. There will always be models that try to offer more that stay in that $1000 price range until all the manufacturers accept the cheaper prices. (this same thing happened with VCRs, DVD player, etc...)

After buying a canon s100 and having not that much use for it, i realize that I too got caught up in the whole digital camara frenzy. Since i only paid about two hundred for a new one, i guess i can keep it for a year, sell it and still break even.

Because lot's of people consider that's an easier way to take tons of home-made PORN pictures without outrageous developing fee.

rc5 probably hit the nail on the head. :) LOL

I am not complaining since lower prices for better cameras is good for the buyer.

Also all the average consumer ever gets to see are the very dregs of the digital camera arena. Would it surprize you to know that there are professional digital backs for medium format cameras that are upwards of 16 megapixels. That's right, 16 Mpixels! All you need is a spare $20,000 laying around and you can have the cutting edge. It's like anything else, consumer digicams are old technology now.

well, newer cameras are forcing them cheaper.

and manufacturers have come out with cheaper cameras so they can capture the low end. trust me, the better cameras start higher.

one way manufacturers save money is to use a cheap plastic shell. or even a good hard plastic shell, as opposed to metal.

another way is to skimp on the optics.

--

prosumer cameras start at $600.

low end pro starts $1000. high end pro starts the same as well, but the accessories bring the price up. start with the body of the camera, then add thousand dollar lenses... etc...

--

don't forget that memory and batteries add to the cost.

since the digicam price are not that low yet (compared to regular camera), will it be justified to get a digital camcorder (not webcam) instead? i mean, you can record movies and you can use those as digicam, right?

of course it's at least 2-3 times the price, but if you can use them for something else, why not?

If you don't need the picture to be very large, say if you're just going to be printing out 4x6's or 5x7's just for family and friends then you can do that. Pictures from a camcorder are not fine photography by any means, but it's good enough for snapshots. It just depends on what you want to do.
