My wife fell in love with the Sony T1 because of it's nice big LCD screen and is asking me to do the research for a new camera. We have a Canon A40 (2MP) and the sharpness of the pics just doesn't do it for us. It was a good value for its time but we've seen some outstandingly clearer pics from other people's cameras. The A40 was terrible in low light in our opinion. It's also noticeably terrible for closeups (even in macro mode). Can't ask too much from a regular point-and-shoot, at least not back then... are 5MP cameras that good now ?

I don't really like Sonys because it's more money we have to spend on memory sticks (already have CF and SD cards) but if it's really that much better than other cameras, it's not a huge deal.

So I'd like to get your opinions based on our preferences above... thx.

dude i just got my a510 for like $175 shipped. its 3.2mp and honestly i am shocked at the image quality on this thing. i still haven't gotten around to messing and learning all the setings on it, but the picture quality is amazing and its only 3.2mp.

EDIT:

here are two threads i have with some pics from the camera ...

thread 1
thread 2

the panoramic shot of my basement wasnt adjusted at all to get better image quality, and it looks pretty grainy, but trust me, thats not how it looks always as you can see from otehr pics.

i saw a hot little Sony at Target yesterday for $449. It's about the size of a wallet with a nice LCD. 5mp and 3x zoom.

The A40 reviews on dpreview were good... and it turned out to be less than expected (low light / macro situations)... how am I supposed to trust the reviews there ? :)

Just go to the forums and ask what people think of them that already have them instead of just reading the reviews...

A little above your budget, but I'm pretty sure I saw a Canon REBEL Digital SLR for sale on here for like $600.

EDIT:

These retail for $900 and up. You certainly can't go wrong with this camera. It's heads and shoulders above any regular point and shoot digital camera.

Get it if you can :)

if I buy a 5MP camera, would about 512MB memory be the standard to go along with it ? Anything less seems insufficient. Really I just need enough for one 2-week trip at a time... we would offload the pics after any trips... not leave them on the card...

I have the Sony-T1, its a very nice camera has lots of options in it. if you havent seen it up close, its smaller than it looks on TV. and for $350 off the egg, i'd recommend it to anyone.

**EDIT**
the 512mb card holds 96 pics at 5mp FYI

For low light shooting, Sony is the best.
Their HAF (Hologram Auto Focus) enabled the camera to focus in total darkness.

For Macro, Nikon is the best.

For me, if picture sharpness matter, I'd stay away from folded optics camers (those square camera/square corner lens). It's just the limitations of the optics, has nothing to do with manufacturer. Looks cool though.

For Sony subcompact, you can go with V1 or W1 (both discontinued, can be had for good deal). I'd recommend F717 also but it's a bit older release and slower AF, but it has swivel screen and fast f2 lens.

Sony DSC-V3, big LCD, very nice-looking camera. Quality is excellent (about the same as the Powershot G6 in terms of quality)

The FZ10 suffers badly in lowlight condition. Don't know if they have fixed that problem in the FZ20. With sufficient light, the quality of the FZ10 can't be beaten. (and I assume the FZ20 is similar if not better)

Canon S50/60 ... either will be less than the $500, and provide lots of features and crisp pics.

Also here is a picture my friend took of his cat. He also has the FZ20

Cat's eye

Have any pics in low-light conditions? (outdoor lowlight such as 6PM cloudy sky, where the flash won't be sufficient)
Thanks

I might on my other computer, I'll try and take some pictures tonight. The only low light picture I posted was the guitar and it turned out pretty good.
