Digital Camera/Photography question

I just bought a digital camera. I have a five gallon fish tank with some neat red oscars and plecos in it, and Id like to take some pics of them through the glass. But everytime I snap the pic, the picture looks horrible because of the flash. When I turn the flash off, the pic looks bad. Anyone know the effective way to do this. Im a camera noob btw.

I was told my camera wasn't bad at all. My friend who knows alot about cameras went with me and said it was a good choice for my price range.

Nikon Coolpix S1

The lights should be at ~45 degree angle to the plane of the glass, two would be best (plus the aquarium light).

By placing the lights at ~45 degrees, the reflections are out of the field of the lens.

Good Luck
