Digital Camera noob...what makes the A80 so highly regarded?

OK, first of all, I'm still getting by with an OLD Kodak DC215 from 99. I've noticed people saying they love cannon cameras here on the forums. I'm just curious...why are they so great?

Take the A80 for instance. only 3x optical zoom. I thought the higher the optical zoom, matched with higher megapixel, is better.

I'll start with that...anyone care to lend some comments/advice?

because its offers a good price/performance ratio

other reason include,
1) canon has brainwashed most of the people here

fact is there are cameras that are priced the same that produce similar if not better pics, but for some reason peopel over look that, kinda like how everyone raves about the ipod when there are better alternatives out there

Any alternatives you would recommend?

It really started with the A40. At the time it blew everything else away. Nothing could touch it for its price and performance.

Granted there are other/better cameras then the A80 for about the same price. But people will stick with a something that is proved to be good.

Personally i bought the A40 based on reviews and the size/style. I have arthritis and those little cameras are a pain to hold. The A40 was a great camera with a style i like. So upgraded to the A80 was a easy choice.

(pod voice) join us . . .

I picked the A80 because I liked the test shots at sites like imaging-resource.com a little better than those of a comparable nikon and they looked much better than those from cheaper fuji and kodak cameras.

Based on the reviews and images, my choice was down to the canon s400 and a80, and I decided on the a80 for the extra settings (while still offering full auto).

I wanted a digital camera that could take good pictures of myself and my friends, along with pretty decent pictures for the rare times I took pictures. It also needed to take some nice pictures for online selling and stuff.

I can't imagine a better bargain then the $100 i paid for my A60 a couple of months ago (hell, some people got it for <80)

I think it is the ultra snazzy flip around LCD that allows you to properly frame pictures (carnal behavior) that would otherwise be impossible.

I have an A70...skipped the A80 altogether (stupidly small LCD screen and whackass movie modes) and went straight to the A95 (ordered today from Onecall.com and it shipped today as well:p)

I like the movie mode! its kinda neat useless but neat.

I agree that the LCD is small.

The A95 would be nice. But the A80 is enough for me now. At least until the 6+MP drop down in price.

Basically it's because it's a brand-name product with proven reliability, an AUTO mode that produces great pictures for the newbies and a full set of manual features to satisfy the tinkerers. Uses the widely accepted and affordable CompactFlash card. AA batteries which can be found anywhere in a pinch. All at a decent price to boot.

There are some excellent alternatives out there, like the aforementioned Nikon Coolpix 4300. In general both Nikon and Canon have a stable of quality consumer digital cameras that most anyone would be happy with.

I kind of like the Panasonic DMC-FZ10. It has a 12x zoom with Electronic Image Stabilization. Very nice 4 megapixel camera. While the weight isn't too bad the lens is huge. Don't ever expect to stick this in any pocket.

Personally I'm thinking I'll just end up sticking with my Oly D-40 until I can afford a Canon Digital Rebel. I've seen the pics from the SLR cameras and no consumer/prosumer camera can touch what an SLR can do.

I'm a big fan of the new HP R707 camera. It has a cool panorama feature, I'm about to get one for my girlfriend.

all this and no mention of the sony t1?

5 megapixels and the beauty is quite apparent from the shell to its large lcd screen on the back. Carl Zeis lens which means it guaranteed to take excellent pictures.

One of my deciding factors was the add-on lenses here. It was one of the few cameras in this price range that has a bayonet mount. There's a bunch of sample pics on that site. I have an assortment of wide angle lenses, macro, telephoto and filters.

At the time I bought it (6 months ago), it was the ONLY camera at that price that offered the megapixels and features I was looking for.

That said, my only gripe with this camera is excessive red-eye in pics taken with flash. Seems more so than other cameras. That and the small LCD - having a flip out is cool, but honestly I would rather have the bigger display of the A75.

There's a similar trend going on with the Logitech Z-640 tincans... :disgust:
