Sooo I'm looking to buy my first digital camera because I've been behind in the times. For the last few years I've used a Nikon N75(orF75) film SLR and it's worked great but I need something better. At the time I cant really afford a Nikon DSLR which sucks since my current lenses would mount on a D50/70 But with college starting back up I just cant afford the 600-700 bucks for the body.

So I'm looking at a digi P&S. And I think I've narrowed it down to a few choices

Either a Nikon Coolpix L1 or a Canon A620

If i'm wrong on either choice please tell me!

Few things I'm looking for-

Image Quality
Price under 250 bucks
Good feature set(as in range of f-stop/shutter speeds, white balance, metering etc)
Battery life

I'm leaning towards the Nikon just because it has better f-stops and takes less batteries(2AA instead of 4AA) Plus I've only ever owned Nikon and love their IQ.

Anyways thanks in advance for any help

I have an older Canon S500 with 5 MP that uses Compact Flash... here is a newer SD500 with 7 MP and SD media for $250.

Awesome camera, very portable, and no AA batteries. I have 2 batteries and a charger, though I can get several hundred shots on one battery (usually a day's shooting on vacation).

I highly recommend Canon.

Nikon and Canon are both top quality cameras. You won't go wrong with either one.

They are both excellent. Get whichever one you prefer, can't go wrong with either of them.

If you can raise your budget a bit, the S2 IS is ultra cheap now that the S3 IS is out. I saw it somewhere a couple weeks agor for $299 shipped...it was a $500 camera not that long ago.

Definitely the Canon S2IS. The Fuji F30 is a favorite of pros because of the excellent image quality and the high ISO capability.

If you already have some lenses, buy a used D50 or D70 on FredMiranda.com for $350-400
