Personally, i would go with the Canon S330 (although its a little above your price range).

Im all about good picture quality and features in a tiny package (hence why i bought a Sony DSC-P9)

The S330 seems to be a fantastic little camera though.

Also, you might wanna look at the Canon A40. Thats a little closer to your price range.

The Canon PowerShot S330 is nice but it's out of your price range, the best price (off the top of my head) is around $360 shipped from Dell Home.

I would highly recommend checking out the Canon PowerShot A40 which is 2 megapixel, 3x optical zoom (which is better than digital zoom), accepts CF (instead of inferior SM) and is an all around excellent digicam. Here are some reviews to push you over the cliff or to get you off the fence and buy it!

PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS
imaging-resource.com (with sample pictures)
dcresource.com (with sample pictures)
steves-digicams.com (with sample pictures)
dpreview.com (97 owner's ratings almost 5 out of 5 stars in every category)

CONSUMER REVIEWS
ePinions.com (100% recommended by 8 reviewers)
Amazon.com (4.8 out of 5 stars with 39 customer reviews)
CNET.com (8 out of 10 stars with 95% positive reviews)

Best of all it's a bargain at only $249

I think the night quality is pretty good, I've thrown some really odd lighting at it too. I think the artificating at night thing is on REALLLLLLLLLLLY long exposures. I've taken a few shots with exposures long enough to require tripods and still none in mine. As I recall many people said they noticed it to be greatly diminished after the new firmware, which mine came with....

Cool, Thanks Soybomb. Is there any way to tell if the Nikon comes with the new firmware?

If it doesn't you can upgrade it with a download from nikon's site, but if you want to check a camera's version just hold down the menu button and turn the camera to playback mode. The most current version is 1.1 I think.

edit:

I bought mine for $235 from outpost.com and the 256 meg viking cf card from amazon for $100.

also rossman, your a40 doesn't come withe awesome rechargable battery the cp2500 does, does it?!?! ;) :)

No but I didn't need one since I already picked up 6 1600 mAH's, 2 AAA NiMH's and Panasonic charger for $20 at CostCo B&M :D

D'oh I'm sorry I thought you had asked about reviews not where to buy, my apologies.

Have you checked out the Canon A40? If you like it and have an OfficeMax near you, you could own it today for $249.
