Digital Camera: Canon S1 IS, Nikon 5400, Sony V1

Ok, I need a new digital camera. The Sony P10 isn't cutting it with its severely limited manual modes anymore. I'm going to pass it off to the gf and get a new one for my trip to Vietnam this summer, but I'm on a limited budget as I also want a new 19" lcd. 😀

So, I've narrowed it down to three choices:

Sony V1

Canon S1 IS

Nikon Coolpix 5400

The Canon has great zoom, but is 3mp. Of course, that cancels out the zoom but would make taking long distance photos easier since I'll be able to see it in the viewfinder and lcd much better then the Nikon or Sony. The Sony has night-time performance in its hologram AF assist and twice as long a shutter speed (30 secs) as the next one up, 15 from the Canon, although the Nikon has a "bulb" mode for 10 min!

The Nikon is about a hundred bucks cheaper then the other two at 250 instead of 350. Vote!

I  my S1 IS. 🙂

I'm sure Ornery will be here shortly though to tell us all how the S1 IS sucks and it's all about the Sony V1. 😛 (Which is also a good camera, it's just not the one I ended up buying)

I love the V1 too. but the other two are also such great cameras!

Canon for most well thought out and easy to navigate menu system. And that flip out LCD is awesome too. And of course, Canon quality pics.

Well, what kind of requirements do you have in a camera? The long zoom and excellent movie mode were mostly what swayed me (over other cameras in a similar price range). The flip-out LCD is nice too - I use it a lot more than I'd have thought, to frame shots that would otherwise be difficult (with the camera high above your head or low, or just otherwise not at eye level).

Well I like taking macro shots (I think the canon and nikon do better then the sony) and landscape shots (canon advantage there for the zoom). Other then that, just a quality camera. I think they all have a slot for external flash.

EDIT: Nikon has flipout lcd too. 😀

the sony or the Nikon

the oinly thing the canon has going for it is IS, and its not all that great

id take More MP with both the Sony and Nikon as well as better flash metering in both and the best glass is prob in the Sony, they also both have better ISO preformance on the non Base ISO

To be honest I haven't really tried many macro shots with my camera, but the ones I have done came out just fine - like setting the focus manually to as low as it will go (2-3 inches? I forget - that is, when there's no light and the camera has trouble focusing itself). There isn't a dedicated Macro mode in the S1 IS like I believe there is in the A-series. There is also no flash hot shoe, which may be a disadvantage for you. It's never been a problem for me though, but if it's something you need or really want, it's something to consider.
