Digital Camera ATOTers

I'm looking to buy a digital camera for around $500 or lower. Im not sure if a camera at Best buy thats $500 is worth anything (no i won't be buying it at best buy) but i want to show where my price range is. If I can get a $800 best buy camera from a reputable online company for $500 I will certainly do it. The problem is the only thing i know about digital cameras is megapixels and that the more the better. I am sure that more goes into cameras than that. Im not necessarily looking for anything super slim and portable but i'm looking for something with good features and performance (bells and whistles). Any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated. There is no pole b/c i dont' know how to make one and I have no idea what cameras to put in the pole.

EDIT** Got my camera I bought the Canon S2 camera Can't wait it use it 🙂

EDIT*** my old camera Sony Mavica FD-91

Get this and spend the extra on a 1GB CF card and some accessories. B&H Photo is one of the best online camera retailers IMO. I've purchased thousands of dollars of photography gear from them over the years. Never had a problem.

do you want a point and shoot type camera or a camera that you can change lenses on (SLR) or something in between?

I got a Nikon D50 (SLR) with 18-55mm lens, carrying case, cleaning kit, SD card reader, memory card wallet, and some kind of picture restore software for $600 from Cameta Camera through Ebay. I've dealth with Cameta twice now and both times were good experiences. Just check Cameta's auctions on Ebay for good deals.

Canon's SD series is good for point and shoot cameras.

that DPReview site is a good site for info.

now between those two cameras there is a 2.1mp difference so why are they similar price. Also I've been looking at the review site and it seems that canon is the type of camera to go with. How long would Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT last me in number of years?

Thats a good question, ive seen commericals with digital cameras that take "action shots" (more than one shot at a time to try to get a series of pictures) and i think thats pretty damn cool. Im not sure if thats canon or nikon i have no clue. I definetly want a point and shoot camera but what more can you get out of different lenses? And are the lenses expensive?

Get ready to spend some cash if you get into the SLR game. I recently bought the Rebel XT. Great camera but then you get will find yourself getting into the lens addiction which is where your money gets sucked out of you... 🙂

After I went SLR, I could never see myself buying another point and shoot.

LOL, you have no idea. Stick with P&S. People around here are starting to get like salesmen. They act like unless you leave the store with a DSLR you're doomed to take terrible pictures.

never factor digital zoom as a selling point..alway see what optical zoom the camera has (higher is better)...

some other factors to consider:

  • portablity (size) vs quality

  • do you already have some kind of flash media (smart media, memory stick, xD, etc - not much of a factor anymore since you can find cheap media now)

  • battery type - AA/AAA you can find anywere - lithium ion - seem to hold longer charge

personally, I have a 5 year old sony dsc-50 camera for piddling around and a sony F828 (upgraded from a F707) for when I need quality pics...

good luck...

The S2 has a 12x optical zoom. Which is a much better lens. It also has IS (image stabilization) which allows you to hand hold the camera in lower light shooting situations without getting camera shake in your pictures.

Unless you are printing huge copies of your pictures you won't notice a difference between 5MP and 7MP (we're talking larger than 8.5x11).

Do these digital cameras have limits on the size of memory card you can use? I see they have a 8gb card out now.

I have a 6MP Digital SLR and I've been using nothing but a 1GB card for well over a year now. Get a 2GB card if you want but you will be able to hold hundreds and hundreds of photos on that even at the max resolution that camera will allow.

i usually don't say to people "hold off because the price will go down" because eventually it always will. however, the PMA trade show is going on right now (all this week) so price drops are imminent. for example, canon S2s have been showing price drops already (S3 was announced)

The Canon 300D doesn't allow RAW unless you do the firmware hack. At least, I don't see it as an option on my camera. I shoot at the highest I can and the images are about 2.5-3MB each.

I'll check into it more tonight. I need a new battery for that camera right now and I'm thinking of upgrading soon anyway.

Congrats on your new purchase.
I personally would've gotten the Pentax *ist DL w/ kit lens for $510.

LOL, you have no idea. Stick with P&S. People around here are starting to get like salesmen. They act like unless you leave the store with a DSLR you're doomed to take terrible pictures.
The most compelling reason to get DSLR over P&S is sensor size. The sensitivity, low noise, dynamic range, colors completely blow away P&S' small sensor size. Right now, DSLRs are at record lows now, costing less than many prosumer P&S. I feel that there's no reason not to get a DSLR if you're going to spend $500.

Plus DSLRs now can EASILY be used as a prosumer P&S. Go buy a superzoom(28-300) for $150, and use automatic mode, and never change the lens. P&S with all the large sensor benefits of a DSLR without breaking the bank.

Don't get me wrong, I've used my fair share of P&S too. I bought an FZ15 superzoom, and it was a great camera - for $350. But at $500, you can get a DSLR, and after I upgraded, the difference is truly amazing.
