digital camera advice

im looking for a sub $400 camera that can take really crisp macro shots, vivid detail while being less than 4 inches is a must. im looking at the OPTIO S4I. I tried it out at Ritz today and it can focus on the tip of a pen from 2.5 inches, however i have heard the image quality isnt as good as similiar cameras. If you know of a camera that is better please let me know.

My A80 can focus on stuff as close as 5cm, which is about 2 inches. Damn good image quality too.

I took these with an A40 + Macro lens.

Sooo.... and A80/70 should take just as good or better pics.

My canon s400 can also do macro shots at 2inches or greater and the quality is amazing.

I'm using a Powershot A80 right now and it does very well indeed. Check out DPReview for some comments & reviews.

I love my A40. If i could talk my wife into an A80 i would go buy one.

though i would like the macro lens for my A40

those without the macro attachment fare well for macro

I also recommend the Canon A70/80. The A75 might be a good deal.

The Nikon Coolpix 5400 will focus down to 1cm. Might be an interesting choice.

Remember, that you're going to want a good set of rechargable batteries, a good charger and a decent compact flash card, and possibly a camera bag and tripid.. oh, and a lens cleaning kit. Trust me, it will get dirty.
