Digital camcorder/video card recommendation

Hi,

I'm wanting to buy a digital camcorder, something decent with firewire. I'm getting really confused about what else I need to edit the video footage on my computer.

- Transferring to the computer. Is this done real-time, and thus needs to be captured in real-time on the computer? or can the camcorder transfer as fast as it can of the DV tape to the computer akin to uploading a datafile?

- Video Editing card. Is this necessary? Like a Raptor or something. If it's not necessary, what do these cards do? Are they just specialised compression/decompression cards for audio and video?

- What software would you recommend?

Any help or links would be much appreciated. Thanks!
