Digital Cable / HDTV ... which PCI Card?

I have time warner cable and I don't want to pay their fees for getting a settop Digital Cable box, OR HDTV access.

I've called their support line asking for details, but they're really quiet about the signal coming in. If I'm going to buy a PCI card, does anyone have any experience with recieving local HDTV signals in proprietary format?

Their FAQs say its not ATSC. Can someone give me details? My zipcode is 91108 in Southern California in case they use different standards from various places. Thanks for any help or recommedations.

So...you have regular analog Time Warner cable but you want to recieve digital signal and hdtv siganl through your cable? Not gonnna happen. You'd need to order both from Time Warner. Now, if you want to get HDTV, you can simply get any HDTV pci card and make or buy a good antenna and get all the local HDTV you want for free.

You need a QAM capable card. The only thing out right now that I know of is the AccessDTv card which supports QAM in its newest software release, no recording though. Also I think FusionTV III is coming soon with QAM support. Regardless you may be unable to use either if TW is encrypting their signal.

You should look around on AVSforum.com HomeTheater Computers forum for more info. Lots of people on there that know more than me.

When you order HD from time warner you get a different set top box, and to the best of my knowledge they don't allow anybody elses box or they don't work.

Man, don't I wish that were true! At least you can get all the OTA DTV/HDTV they broadcast for free.

Well don't they broadcast HDTV? Yep..just need an antenna. Get CBS, ABC, FOX, NBC, PBS, all in HDTV.

Yea, I was only commenting on "and get all the local HDTV you want for free" They are quite far from offering all I "want", and what they do offer in my area isn't exactly ready for prime time yet. I do enjoy the broadcasts, they are "very slowly" adding programming. MNF is the big addition this fall, kinda iffy at times...but I'm likin' it.
