Hey, I have a few questions for you and was wondering if you could offer some advice.
First being. I would like to be able to receive digital cable / HD channels at my university. However, the university runs the cable system on campus, and does not want to deal with maintaining and handing out cable boxes. Since the university is in charge of the system, you can't go to Comcast directly and get service or cable boxes. My University does have a digital cable package with Comcast however, as they have all 7 channels of HBO and a few other digital channels put through as local access on campus, from channel 71 though 85. These channels are received by normal Comcast Motorola dc 2000 cable boxes in the av studio on campus where I work (Work Study) The cable system on campus is 100% fiber as of this year, and has enough bandwidth to handle digital cable or HD channels. There is also only one way communication with Comcast, so the boxes couldn't communicate back. Which means PPV and On Demand would not work, however I believe that you still could receive the digital channels and guide information. My RC tv has the Gemstar TV Guide plus thing, and it is able to download the guide over the cable system with out a problem. That being said, does anyone have any advice or information on how I could pick up digital/HD Channels in my room through the cable system? I don't really care about getting more channels, I just would like to have access to the HD channels such as NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS, UPN, WB, Discovery HD and TNT and TBS HD (
All these stations are included in the basic cable package my university has, and would be available with out a digital package if you had a digital capable box) . Or at least get the simulcast of the basic cable channels in digital. Is this possible in any from, and if so how?
If it's not possible, would it be possible to at least get the locals over the air? Is so what kind of set up would I need. For example, what kind of box, and antenna that could be used in a dorm room.
Lastly, do you know of anyway of tuning in or recording HD channels on a laptop. I have a 1920 x 1200 LCD on my laptop, and would love to be able to record things, such as live performances of my favorite artists or what not. One thing I have seen, is the ONAIR USB HDTV box on the web, but know nothing about it or if it' has decent quality. And is there any other way I could record a HD broadcast, or tv at all, and get it to my laptop other then a tv tuner / capture device? I have Windows XP x64 edition now, which leaves me in the spot, of not have any drivers for any tv tuner that?s on the market. Do you have any recommendations for this situation?
Thanks for your time, and help
~Chris
